Punitive strikes by India, a befitting reply to rogue Pakistan May 24, 2017 11:20

The Army has destroyed the Pakistani military posts in Rajouri with punitive artillery assaults, to give "a befitting reply to the Pakistan military which aids infiltration into the Indian side" of Jammu and Kashmir. India made its assault along the Nowshera sector in Rajouri. "With the mercury rising and snow-melting in the valley, the chances of infiltration increase from the Pakistani side. The Army is all geared up to counter such threats," Major General Ashok Narula said. "It was part of the plan to proactively dominate the LoC and counter-terrorism operations to curb infiltration," he added. The Army had said that the targeted fire assaults, with light field guns, anti-tank guided missiles, heavy mortars, rocket launchers and "infantry tanks", are being conducted to "pro-actively dominate" the Line of Control and "destroy the locations aiding infiltration of terrorists", as part of the overall counter-terrorism strategy. Defence minister Arun Jaitley, said that the government fully supported the Army's "actions across the LoC" for ensuring peace in J&K. "Indian Army is taking pre-emptive and measured actions to counter terrorism in the Valley and disengage Pakistan posts across the LoC which support infiltration," he added. "There have been casualties in our bunker-bursting assaults across the border, though it's tough to assess the extent of damage. If the Pakistan Army and ISI have stepped up efforts to fuel trouble in the Kashmir Valley, we have decided to keep them hopping on the LoC. Pakistan Army, of course, is adept at hiding its casualties," a top Army officer said. By Premji

GST rates announced May 20, 2017 11:04

The Goods and Services Tax (GST) Council has finalised four tax rates of 5, 12, 18 and 28 percent. Revenue Secretary Hasmukh Adhia has said that, the council has decided a 1 percent Tax Collected at Source (TCS) rate for e-commerce players such as Flipkart, Snapdeal, even though the law provides for a levy for 2 per cent tax rate. “The rates are in line with those finalised for goods. With this, rates of all items except a handful including gold, have been decided ahead of the roll out of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime from July 1.” Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said, “We made sure that consumers don't have to pay more. The net effect of goods and services is not going to be inflationary because, once the system of input credits starts the actual incidence is going to be positively impacted.” "The telecom industry is disappointed with the announced GST rate of 18 per cent, which will further stress an already bleeding sector," said Rajan Mathews, director general of Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI). The decision is disappointing, he said, since "COAI had submitted to the government that consideration be given to the sector's present financial condition and that any GST rate beyond the existing 15 percent (service tax) would make telecom services more expensive for the consumer". "For service providers, it is going to get troublesome," claims Saloni Roy, a senior director at tax consultancy firm Deloitte Haskins & Sells LLP. By Premji

Jubiliant familly welcomes ICJ verdict May 19, 2017 11:31

“The Ministry of External Affairs ( MEA) and its minister, Sushma Swaraj, are in touch with us and keep us apprised of the developments. The verdict has come as a major relief and we are hopeful that Jadhav will get a fair trial. The provisional order is a step in the right direction,” a family member of Kulbhushan Jadhav said. “Since his arrest in March last year, the family has not been able to speak to Jadhav. We are praying there is a favourable response,” added the source. “The decision by the ICJ has only reaffirmed our faith in our government and we hope Pakistan will abide by the order, Sachin Vaze, a former Mumbai Police officer and a family friend said.” When asked about the 40-day appeal period that will lapse on Friday, Vaze said the family was hopeful Pakistan will not defy the ICJ order. “Pakistan is bound by the Vienna convention and we don’t think they will defy its order,” he added. Subroto Mukherjee, fondly called Debu by friends, including Jadhav, said, “Back then, we did not know what to do to help our friend. I came to know about the petition launched by the Indian-American community in the US. It needed 1 lakh signatures to get a response from the Donald Trump administration. Hence I would go around buildings in the vicinity where Jadhav spent his early years, asking people to sign it. That is all we could do then, to have some hope of him returning.” He added, “Later when we heard the arguments of Harish Salve in the ICJ, I was quite optimistic.” Arvind Singh, one of Jadhav’s friends, said, “This is a big victory for India. We are grateful to the entire nation for having prayed for Jadhav. We are now hopeful of him coming back soon.” By Premji

Pakistan army is displaying signs of nervousness about a trans-LoC response from India to the beheading of two security forces personnel on the Indian side on May 1. Pakistan army’s Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) has released a statement, in which they have said that “any misadventure by Indian Army across Line of Control will be a miscalculation, shall be responded with full force and could lead to unintended consequences”. The ISPR statement reflects the mindset of the Pakistan army, sources said, “Such a statement is highly unusual and it follows their chief’s visit to the area. It is almost an admission that they are scared of our response”. The sources refused to talk about the certainty, nature or time of a trans-LoC response, stating that “these are matters which are decided at the highest levels after considering many factors. Our options and plans have always existed, even before these beheadings took place”. The two armies are exchanging heavy fire on the Line of Control (LoC) in the Naushera sector of J&K.  Pakistan Army Chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa had visited Line of Control in Nikial sector, which has witnessed heavy exchange of fire by both sides over the past two weeks. After Make in India, now it's Be Indian, Buy Indian May 13, 2017 11:06

For the Modi government the goalposts seem to be fast shifting from just Make In India to Buy In India. The mega policy is to be in the works covering several key economic sectors, where domestic procurement should be given preference. The  the Prime Minister’s Office had a meeting on the contours of the proposed policy, which could be rolled out soon. The Union government has come up with decisions for sectors such as petroleum and steel, highlighting preferential domestic procurement, but the new policy with the swadeshi focus is expected to be much larger in scope The government is planning to come up with a policy which has a thrust on local procurement, as it is keen to spread a feel-good factor.  a bureaucrat who has been associated with key economic sectors said that, “preferential domestic procurement has always been controversial and there’s a possibility of it getting challenged at the World Trade Organization (WTO)”. Madan Sabnavis, chief economist, CARE Ratings has said that, there could be merit in such a policy, as the economic growth has been slow and the government has been the primary spender on infrastructure projects. Any policy on preferential domestic procurement could imply job creation, a priority area for the Narendra Modi government. The Minister of State for Commerce & Industry said that the government is planning to come out with a policy on Industrial Revolution 4.0 by September, marking the third anniversary of Make In India, to help companies manufacture in the country and create jobs. In March, the government has announced a restructured general finance rules for public finance, including government procurement, to give first preference to locally manufactured goods.
