Voting on for India’s new President July 17, 2017 12:31

Even when number gives an edge for ruling coalition, opposition decided not to lose a chance to confront Modi led NDA. JD(U), part of opposition group is voting for Kovind which has further detoriated the opposition unity. 776 MPs and 4120 MLAs will decide in a secret ballot vote today when polling began at 10 am. Meira Kumar may get the support of 17 opposition parties, but Ramnath Kovind is set to get nearly 70 per cent of the electoral college votes. While Ram Nath Kovind is set to sweep, Congress president Sonia Gandhi sought “a vote of conscience”, calling the contest “a clash of ideas and a conflict of disparate values”. “However, it is a matter of satisfaction and pride that the election campaign has been a dignified one. All the political parties need to be congratulated. All parties must train their MPs and MLAs to cast their votes so that not a single vote is wasted,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi said. Amid talks of cross voting from the Opposition camps, the rift in Samajwadi Party is not helping Meira Kumar's cause. SP patrons Mulayam Singh Yadav and Shivpal Yadav have declared that they will support Kovind, while Akhilesh Yadav is with Congress' Meira Kumar. The Electoral College members have been barred from carrying personal pens inside voting chambers. They will have to mark their ballot with a specially-designed marker, the Election Commission (EC) said. Serial-numbered pens with violet ink have been supplied by the EC. "Before entering voting chambers, polling staff will collect personal pens from the voters and hand over the special pens to be returned later," an EC official told reporters. By Premji

India tops global index with the most confidence in their government July 14, 2017 10:49

The latest edition of the OECD's Government at a Glance report states that 73 percent Indians have faith in the Narendra Modi led NDA coalition, the highest in the world. India is followed by the Canadian government headed by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, which has the confidence of 62 percent citizens. Turkey, witnessed a failed coup attempt in 2016, is in third place with 58 percent. Russia and Germany has rounded off the top 5, with confidence levels at 58 percent and 55 percent respectively. Indians have the most confidence in their government, a report published by a major economic cooperation organisation said. The United States government led by President Donald Trump has secured only 30 percent of the peoples' confidence. In the United Kingdom, which is in the midst of a bitter 'Brexit', trust in the Theresa May government stands at 41 percent, the report collated by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) said. Greece, which had to bear the brunt of the EU migration crisis, while struggling with a failing economy, is at the bottom of the table with a mere 13 percent of the people's confidence. The recent impeachment of President Park Geun-hye over a corruption scandal has reduced the confidence in the South Korean government to 25 percent. Government trust levels are generally determined by whether or not people consider their government stable and reliable, whether it's able to protect its citizens from risk and whether it can effectively deliver public services. India modernising nuclear arsenal: US experts July 13, 2017 11:13

Two top American nuclear experts have said that India continues to modernise its atomic arsenal with an eye on China and the country's nuclear strategy which was focused on Pakistan now appears to place increased emphasis on the Communist giant. An article published in the July-August issue of the digital journal- After Midnight - has claimed that India is developing a missile which can target all of China from its bases in South India. India is estimated to have produced enough plutonium for 150-200 nuclear warheads, but has produced only 120-130, wrote Hans M Kristensen and Robert S Norris in the article- "Indian nuclear forces 2017". India's nuclear strategy, was traditionally focused on Pakistan, now it appears to place increased emphasis on China, the two experts claimed. "While India has traditionally been focused on deterring Pakistan, its nuclear modernisation indicates that it is putting increased emphasis on its future strategic relationship with China," they wrote. "That adjustment will result in significantly new capabilities being deployed over the next decade that may influence how India views nuclear weapons' role against Pakistan," they said. "At least four more systems are in development. The development program is in a dynamic phase, with long-range land and sea-based missiles emerging for possible deployment within the next decade," it said. "The extra range will allow the Indian military to establish Agni-5 bases in central and southern India, further away from China," the research article said. By Premji

Modi pitches against terror in G20 July 08, 2017 10:48

Equating Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Muhammad with the Islamic State and Al-Qaeda, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has made a radical suggestion, that government functionaries from countries that support terrorists be barred from entering G20 countries. 11-point plan was proposed by Modi as the lead speaker at the G20 leaders’ session on “fighting terrorism”, organised by German Chancellor Angela Merkel. The 21-paragraph joint statement issued by the G20 leaders, in its very first paragraph, said that “terrorist safe havens” must be eliminated in every part of the world. “We, the leaders of the G20, strongly condemn all terrorist attacks worldwide and stand united and firm in the fight against terrorism and its financing. These atrocious acts have strengthened our resolve to cooperate to enhance our security and protect our citizens. Terrorism is a global scourge that must be fought and terrorist safe havens eliminated in every part of the world,” the statement said. “There are various forms of terrorism. Different names but same ideology. Daesh and Al-Qaeda in the Middle East; LeT, JeM and Haqqani network in South Asia; Boko Haram in Nigeria, but their basic ideology is the same. Naam anek soch ek (Many names but the same thought and ideology). The basis of their ideology is hatred and killing of people,” Modi told G20 leaders. Modi said that terrorists are using cyberspace to radicalise and recruit youth. “Terrorists are better networked than countries… the scope of our actions are mainly national. The international cooperation is weak,” he said. “G20 should collectively oppose terrorism financing, franchises, safe havens, support and sponsors,” Modi said. “We call for the implementation of existing international commitments on countering terrorism, including the UN Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy, and compliance with relevant resolutions and targeted sanctions by the UN Security Council relating to terrorism. We commit to continue to support UN efforts to prevent and counter terrorism,” the joint statement at G20 said. By Premji
